Earth Day Webinar: Climate Action: Bridging Science and Activism
April 21, 2020 – A free Earth Day webinar will detail how climate scientists and climate activists can work together and learn from one another. The event will feature Marcia Macedo, a Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) scientist who studies how the Amazon’s aquatic ecosystems are changing in response to deforestation, fire, and climate change, and Jonah Gottlieb, Co-founder and Executive Director of National Children’s Campaign (NCC). The two have been paired through a documentary film project of Principle Pictures and the Woods Hole Film Festival Film & Science Initiative and will share what they are gaining from that experience.
WHAT: Climate Action: Bridging Science and Activism
WHEN: Wednesday, April 22, 12 p.m. ET
WHERE: Fast and free registration on Zoom
WHO: Marcia Macedo, Associate Scientist, Woods Hole Research Center
Jonah Gottlieb, Co-Founder and Executive Director, National Children’s Campaign
“Even in the midst of this pandemic, it is important to mark this milestone 50th Earth Day,” said WHRC Chief Communications Officer Heather Goldstone. “While climate action and Earth Day events look different right now, we will still be coming together – virtually – to celebrate successes and look to the future. With all of us seeing, firsthand, the importance of scientific expertise in addressing a global crisis, we are excited to share the perspectives of Woods Hole Research Center’s scientists on this year’s Earth Day theme: climate action.”
“Earth Day is about protecting the environment” said NCC Co-Founder and President Kimberly Gutzler. “The 50th Earth Day is focused on the climate crisis, which the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believes must see dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emission by the 60th Earth Day or the window to mitigate the damage of a warming planet will have effectively closed. The National Children’s Campaign is dedicated to making sure that doesn’t happen by taking aggressive action now.”
With millions of Americans doing their part to help stop the spread of the coronavirus by staying home, Woods Hole Research Center, with the generous support of the Kaneb family, has launched a new online climate science speaker series to help people of all ages and learning levels engage with this critical issue. Join us for informative and accessible presentations followed by opportunities for your questions.

The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) has been studying climate change and developing solutions since 1985. WHRC works with an international network of partners in the private and public sectors to ensure that science is put to use in climate policy and decision-making. Recent major science and policy projects have taken place in Alaska, Brazil, Mexico, Nepal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and others, with collaborators such as the World Bank, NASA, USAID and The Nature Conservancy.
